Double Dutch by Sharon M. Draper

The theme in this book is about keeping secrets.  Delia, the main character, couldn't read and she didn't want anyone to find out, especially her friends and family.  She felt ashamed and embarrassed because she couldn't read.  Randy, the other main character, also had a secret.  His dad was missing and he was living alone.  He didn't want anyone to find out because he was afraid he would have to go to a foster home.  The main idea Draper is trying to get across is that it is not a good idea to keep secrets from your friends and family.

The author's use of simile helps to create visions in your mind as you read the book.  One example of this is when she describes the bad boys who wear chains on their pants.

I give this book a five star rating because of the theme she conveys.
